Cross-country moving insurance can help you recoup the cost of any damaged or lost items. While moving companies are legally required to offer basic coverage, it’s only good for $0.60 per pound of damaged goods. If you’re just moving a one-bedroom apartment, it may actually take longer than expected. Moving companies bundle smaller moves in the same truck to cut down on wasted space. It’s good for efficiency and good for your wallet, but there’ll be delays for deliveries and pickups along the way.
If you’re DIYing your own packing, it’s a good idea to start with your least-used items first. Artwork and seasonal decor, that stuff can be boxed up first. Work your way up to the items that you use every day, and make sure you pack your must-have items in an easy-to-access suitcase or backpack. You’ll be living out of that backpack for the duration of your move, so make sure it’s a proper essentials bag: toiletries, chargers, and a few changes of clothes for starters.
