The cheapest way to move is to DIY. At least, on paper. Unfortunately, after you rent a truck, pay for gas, shell out extra money for food and lodging, and skip out on all those paychecks so you can wrap, pack, load, and haul all by yourself, your savings may not be what you expected. It may cost a little extra, but a full service move is way more efficient.
Legit moving companies will be certified by the Department of Transportation (DOT), and if they operate across state lines, they’ll need to be certified by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) as well. When you’re on their website, look for a DOT number and an MC number. If you can’t find them, don’t be afraid to ask!
