Lots of people want to move overseas, but the move itself can be intimidating, to say the least. Sure, there’s packing boxes and long-haul trucking involved (just like a regular ol’ long distance move), but there’s also customs, shipping containers, cargo ships and airfare. If moving is a big deal, international moving is massive. Thankfully, Moving APT makes it easy.

Moving overseas costs anywhere from $2,000 to $10,000. It all depends on how much you’re hauling, how far it’s going, and what type of transportation you’ll be using to get everything to your destination.
If you’re just shipping a few boxes, it’ll be on the lower side of the spectrum. But if you have to rent a shipping container or send your items via air freight, expect to pay much more.
As a moving company, the paperwork we typically handle involves customs. We’ll deal with bills of lading, declaration forms, and insurance forms. But you’ll still have to take care of some paperwork on your end, too – namely applying for your visa, getting your passport, securing your work permit, and more. (We may handle the hard stuff, but your immigration papers are a little too high-value for us.)
Moving to a different country can be done in a matter of hours if you’re living out of a backpack. But if you’re sending all of your furniture, appliances, and other items via ship or plane, it can take anywhere from a few days to a few months.
Shipping via air freight is the fastest option, but it’s also pretty expensive. On the other hand, surface shipping (AKA loading your stuff onto a cargo vessel) is the slowest, but saves you a huge amount of money. Air freight can get your items to point B in a matter of days. Surface shipping, a matter of months.
Port-to-port moving is pretty much what it sounds like: You (or your movers) drop your belongings off at a port, and it gets shipped to a port at your destination country. From there, you’ll have to pick up your stuff at the destination port, and haul it the rest of the way to your new home.
On the other hand, door-to-door moving means you don’t have to deal with any trucking on your end. Your items get picked up at your old house, and your movers handle the rest: taking it to a port, loading it onto a ship, and coordinating with a second team to pick up your items at your destination. From there, the second team will hand-deliver your items to your new place.
If you’re trying to save money on an international move, the best strategy is to downsize. We always recommend getting rid of your old and unwanted items before you shop for quotes. It costs more money to move more stuff, so try to trim the fat ahead of time.
Aside from selling (or donating) your unwanted items, it’s a good idea to get a jump on the moving process as early as possible. We recommend 2-3 months in advance for a long distance move, but for an international move, you may want to double that – especially if you need to complete passport and visa applications.
