Residential Moving FAQs
Residential moving can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $8,000. There are various factors that can affect your final price, but the most important ones are the distance and dimensions of your move.
More miles and more items mean more money for the move. If you want to save big, we recommend downsizing as much as possible before you shop around for quotes. If you don’t want them, get rid of those old, unused items so you don’t pay to have them moved.
Moving typically takes between 1 and 21 days. It’s a huge window, but for good reason. Like the price of your move, the duration depends on how much stuff you’re transporting, and how far it has to go on moving day.
You’d think a smaller move would get done in a lot less time. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. A small move means a lot of empty space on the truck or trailer, and that means a lot of wasted gas money. To maximize efficiency, your movers will bundle multiple moves in the same trailer (while keeping everything safely separated, of course). Great for efficiency, but expect delays for pickups and deliveries on the route.
In the moving industry, local moves are anything under 100 miles, and within the same state. On the other hand, long distance moves are anything over 100 miles or across state lines. Is the state line just a few blocks away? Doesn’t matter – you’ll still be working with long distance movers.
The pricing structure is different, too. Local movers charge per hour, per mover (and it takes about 2 movers per bedroom). Long distance movers charge per mile, per pound (although some may use cubic feet). There are some cases in which a long distance move is actually cheaper than a local move: it all comes down to how much you’re moving and how far you’re going.
Legit moving companies will be certified by the Department of Transportation (DOT). Look for a DOT number on their website, and don’t be afraid to ask your mover for confirmation if you can’t find it.
If you’re dealing with long distance movers, there’s an extra layer of protection. To operate across state lines, long distance movers need to be certified with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Look for an FMCSA-issued motor carrier (MC) number on your moving company’s website, too.
A binding estimate means you’re paying what’s on your quote – nothing more, and nothing less. Some moving companies offer nonbinding estimates that can be adjusted to reflect any hiccups on moving day. Fortunately, they can’t ratchet up your price by more than 10%.
If your mover offers a binding estimate, it’s a good thing. It means you know what you’ll be paying, and they won’t change your price on you. (Don’t try and pull a fast one and throw in a surprise piano after you’ve received your binding estimate, though. Your movers will just send you a new contract – or worse, tell you to take a hike.)
